Catalytic Converter Removal, Installation, and Inspection

Due to the high temperatures of the exhaust system, the exhaust nut, studs and bolts may seize preventing easy removal. If you encounter a seized condition, do the following.

Apply rust penetrant to the nut/stud or bolt.
Allow the penetrant to sit. The amount of time may vary.
Lightly tap the nut/stud or bolt with a hammer.
Slowly loosen the nut or bolt.
If the nut or bolt still will not loosen, repeat steps to .

NOTE: Remove the exhaust mounting rubber.

Note for installation

Before installing the TWC brackets (A), confirm the bolts and nuts fixing the TWC to the turbocharger are tightened to the specified torque.
When installing the TWC, loosely install all bolts by hand. Then tighten the TWC bracket mounting bolts in the numbered sequence shown.

7. TWC Assembly - Remove

When installing the TWC, loosely install all bolts and nuts by hand. Then tighten the TWC mounting bolts and nuts in the numbered sequence shown.

8. TWC Cover - Remove (if necessary)


9. All Removed Parts - Install

Install the parts in the reverse order of removal with new gaskets and new self-locking nuts.

Plug up the hole(s) other than main exhaust gas route.

Using a flashlight visually check for plugging, melting, or cracking of the catalyst. Replace the TWC if any of the visible area is damaged or plugged.
