4. Propeller Shaft - Remove

1.
Remove the propeller shaft protector (A).



2.
Remove the center support bearing mounting bolts (B).

3.
Make a reference mark (C) across the No. 1 propeller shaft (D) and the transfer companion flange (E).

Remove the No. 1 propeller shaft flange bolts (F).

5.
Make a reference mark (G) across the No. 2 propeller shaft (H) and the rear differential companion flange (I).

6.
Remove the No. 2 propeller shaft flange bolts (J).

5. All Removed Parts - Install

1.
Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

NOTE: Tighten the propeller shaft flange bolts, the center support bearing mounting bolts in the numbered sequence shown.

Universal Joint and Boot

1.
Shift the transmission to N position/mode.

2.
Release the parking brake.

3.
Check the center support bearing (A) for excessive play or noise. If the center support has excessive play or noise, replace the propeller shaft assembly.

4.
Check the rubber portion (B) of the center support bearing for damage and deterioration. If the rubber portion is damaged or deteriorated, replace the propeller shaft assembly.

5.
Check the universal joints for excessive play or noise. If the universal joints have excessive play or noise, replace the propeller shaft assembly.


Propeller Shaft Runout

6.
Shift the transmission to N position/mode.

7.
Install a dial indicator with its needle on the center of the No. 1 and No. 2 propeller shaft.

8.
Turn the other propeller shaft slowly and check the runout. Repeat this procedure for the other propeller shaft.

9.
If the runout on either propeller shaft exceeds the service limit, replace the propeller shaft assembly.
