Replace

6. Transfer Assembly - Remove

7. All Removed Parts - Install

1.
Clean the areas where the transfer assembly contacts the transmission with solvent, and dry with compressed air.

2.
Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

Transfer Gear Backlash Measurement

4. Transfer Assembly - Transfer Gear Backlash Check

1.
Shift the transmission to N.

2.
Set a dial indicator (A) on the transfer companion flange setting bolt (B).

NOTE: Position the dial indicator tip (C) on the direct extension of the bolt center (D).

3.
Measure the transfer gear backlash.

Standard:
0.06?0.16 mm (0.0024?0.0063 in)

4.
If the transfer gear backlash is out of the standard, replace the transfer assembly.

Fluid Leak Check

1. Transfer Assembly Fluid (Transmission Side) - Leak Check

1.
Check for fluid leaks between the mating faces of the transfer assembly and the transmission.

2.
If there is leak:

Replace the O-ring between the transfer assembly and the transmission.
Replace the O-ring between the transfer housing and the transfer hypoid drive shaft assembly.

2. Transfer Assembly Fluid (Propeller Shaft Side) - Leak Check

1.
Check for fluid leaks between the transfer companion flange and the transfer oil seal.

2.
If there is leak, replace the transfer oil seal and the O-ring.

Total Starting Torque Measurement

2. Transfer Assembly - Remove

3. Transfer Assembly - Total Starting Torque Check

1.
Secure the transfer housing (A) in a bench vise (B).

NOTE: To prevent damaging the transfer housing, always use wood blocks or equivalent materials (C) between the transfer housing and the bench vise.

2.
Rotate the companion flange several turns to seat the tapered roller bearings.

3.
Measure the total starting torque at the companion flange (D) using a torque wrench (E) and a socket (F).

Standard:
3.28?8.77 N·m (33.4?89.4 kgf·cm, 29.0?77.6 Ibf·in)

4.
If the total starting torque is out of the standard, replace the transfer assembly.

Transfer Hypoid Drive Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Check

1. Transfer Hypoid Drive Gear/Shaft Assembly - Remove

1.
Remove the transfer hypoid drive gear/shaft assembly (A) with the dowel pin (B) and the O-ring (C).

2. Transfer Hypoid Drive Gear - Tooth Contact Pattern Check

1.
Check the transfer hypoid drive gear tooth contact pattern.

2.
If the transfer gear tooth contact is incorrect, replace the transfer assembly.

3. All Removed Parts - Install

1.
Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.
