Steering Gearbox Removal and Installation

NOTE:

Using clean solvent and a brush, wash any oil and dirt off the end of the steering gearbox. Blow dry with compressed air.
Lower the front subframe from the body, and remove the steering gearbox through the gap produced by lowering the front subframe.
Unless otherwise indicated, illustrations used in the procedure are for AWD model.

Replace

7. Connectors (EPS Harness) - Disconnect


1.
Disconnect the connectors (A).

NOTE: Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid contamination from grease or water.

2.
Remove the harness clip (B).

14. Front Lower Arm Mounting Bolt - Remove


15. Front Subframe - Lift Down


1.
Set the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) on a transmission jack (A), line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, and tighten the bolts.

2.
Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe (B).

3.

NOTE: Do not lower the front subframe more than required.

16. Front Stabilizer Bar Bushing Holder - Remove


17. Steering Gearbox - Remove


1.
Remove the pinion shaft grommet (A).

2.
Remove the steering gearbox (B) through the clearance of the body and the front subframe.

Replace

1. Steering Gearbox - Install


1.
Loosely install the steering gearbox (A) and steering gearbox stiffeners (B) to the front subframe with new mounting bolts.

2.
Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque in the numbered sequence shown.

3.
Install the pinion shaft grommet (C).

NOTE: Install the grommet with the arrow facing towards the front of the vehicle.

3. Front Subframe - Install


1.
Set the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) on a transmission jack (A), line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, and tighten the bolts.

2.
Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe (B).

11. Connectors (EPS Harness) - Connect

Install the harness clip (A).

2.
Connect the connectors (B).

18. Steering Gearbox After Install - Check

1.
After installation, check these items:

With the front wheels straight ahead, make sure the steering wheel is centered and the turning revolutions from center to full lock (left and right) is equal. If not, check the installation of the steering wheel and the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.
With the tires raised off the ground, check for noise and abnormality by turning the steering wheel fully to the right and left several times.
Check that the EPS indicator does not come on.
